This guide is for you if...
✔ You're fairly new to babywearing
✔ You have never heard of a babywearing consultant until now
✔ You want to know more about how babywearing consultancy works
✔ You're considering getting personalised-support with carrying
✔ You're thinking about buying a sling
If you've been researching baby carriers, you may have come across the term babywearing consultant and wondered what it actually means.
Do they teach you how to use a sling?
Help you choose a carrier?
Check you're carrying safely?
The answer is… all of the above!
A babywearing consultant provides personalised support to help you carry your baby safely, comfortably and confidently, whether you're completely new to babywearing or looking to get more from a carrier you already own. They are likely (do check) properly trained and insured to teach (I actually did 2 consultancy courses with Slingababy and Carrying Matters there are other schools of babywearing in the UK too). Consultants tend to know lots about carrying, with many styles of sling, and are usually extremely passionate about the topic too – and genuinely care and want to support you to get the most out of babywearing as there are just so many benefits.
What does a Babywearing Consultant/Educator do?
Every family is different.
That's why a consultation isn't about recommending the "best" baby carrier, it's about so much more, we lend an ear, listen to your concerns, and can help with an existing or finding a new carrier if necessary to help find the best option for your family.
A babywearing consultant can help you:
Choose between different types of carriers.
Give you an opportunity to try before buying (they usually have a library of slings and here's why I highly recommend this
Improve the fit of a carrier you already own.
Learn how to use a new sling confidently.
Check positioning and babywearing safety.
Troubleshoot comfort issues.
Find a carrier that suits your lifestyle.
Learn how to adjust your carrier as your baby grows.
Rather than following generic online advice, you'll receive guidance tailored to you and your baby.
Why do we exist?!
Carrying is a skill that is learnt, just like breastfeeding. In western culture particularly that became fairly lost with popularity of prams in the Victorian era. Babywearing is now becoming popular again with attachment parenting, and plenty of retailers have jumped on the band-wagon too with 'new and innovative slings', but often those brands don't know all that much about carrying, things are marketed incorrectly as newborn, and as a result safety and comfort is compromised, and confidence over time has been lost too.
As a comparison, in other parts of the world carrying has very much remained a part of daily life for centuries, is far more instinctive, and has naturally been passed down generation to generation, so educators are needed far less in some cultures. You'll notice how cloth and more 'traditional' carrying methods are used too.
Who are consultations for?
Many people assume consultations are only for first-time parents. In reality, they can be really valuable and helpful for anyone, including:
Expectant parents preparing for their baby's arrival.
Families with newborns.
Parents whose baby cries in the carrier.
People experiencing shoulder or back discomfort.
Families wanting to try different carrier styles.
Parents ready to move into back carrying.
Grandparents and other carers who would like to babywear comfortably.
Can they help if I already own a carrier?
Absolutely.
In fact, this is one of the most common reasons people book.
Sometimes a carrier simply needs a few adjustments to feel completely different.
A small change to the waistband, shoulder straps or baby's position can often improve comfort and how a baby soothes dramatically. Read more about baby crying in the sling here. If the carrier genuinely isn't the right fit, a consultation can also help you explore other options before spending and potentially wasting more money.
Why not just watch YouTube?
There are some excellent videos online, but they can't see you and answer your questions as you go. You'll likely have to pause and slow things down - I often point people to good ones for recap but nothing beats proper human connection and support.
Every parent has a different body shape.
Every baby is a different size.
Every carrier adjusts slightly differently.
A consultation allows someone to guide you through fitting your carrier to suit both you and your baby, answering questions as you go, and going at a pace totally tailored to you and your family!
Can I try different carriers?
One of the biggest benefits of seeing a babywearing consultant is the opportunity to compare different carrier styles. You may arrive convinced you want one particular carrier and leave having discovered something completely different (and not even on your radar) suits you better. Trying before buying can save money, reduce frustration and help you choose a carrier you'll genuinely enjoy using.
Is it only about safety?
Safety is a massive priority of course, and something we'll be weaving in throughout but consultations are about much more than that.
They are also about:
Comfort.
Confidence.
Practicality.
Understanding your options.
Making everyday life easier.
You'll be in a judgment-free environment too.
The aim is to help babywearing become something you enjoy rather than something you struggle with.
Is a consultation worth it?
Many parents tell me they wish they'd booked / discovered me sooner! I've also had some lovely reviews and feedback - which is so rewarding!
Whether you're choosing your first carrier, wondering if your baby has outgrown their current one or simply wanting reassurance that you're carrying comfortably, having personalised support can make a huge difference.
Final thoughts
A babywearing consultant isn't there to tell you which carrier you should buy.
They're there to help you understand your options, build confidence and find a safe, comfortable solution that works for your family. Because when carrying feels comfortable for both of you, it's much easier to enjoy all the closeness, convenience and connection that babywearing has to offer, and enjoy your journey with it as much as we enjoy(ed) ours.
Happy Carrying,
Emma
