This guide is for you if...

✔ You're new to carrying

✔ You haven't heard of or are curious to learn more about Sling Libraries

✔ You know what a sling library is and are looking for more info

✔ You are thinking about getting support with carrying

✔ You've tried babywearing and it's feeling harder than expected

If you've searched for "sling library near me", chances are you've reached the stage where you know you want to try babywearing, but you're not quite sure where to start.

With so many different baby carriers available, choosing one can feel overwhelming.

A sling library gives you the opportunity to explore your options, get guided support with someone who really gets it, and find a carrier that genuinely works for you and your baby.

At Little One Snug – Hastings Sling Library and Consultancy I help families both locally and those who live within a 1hr radius in East Sussex to discover comfortable, safe and practical ways to carry their little ones. Online support may also be an option for those who are a little less local too!

What is a sling library?

A sling library is a place where parents can try different types of baby carriers with support from a trained babywearing educator. Rather than relying only on online reviews or recommendations, you can actually test how different carriers feel.

Different libraries will naturally have different carriers – but there are many brands we all agree on that have a firm place within the marketplace, or we know are popular with the babywearing community for a variety of reasons so are very worth showing to wearers who needs tick certain boxes. We have tried and tested things, understand what works on different body-types, will consider flexiblity, and love creative problem solving! We regularly geek out on and discuss carriers regularly with peers – slings even go on tours so we can decide if something is worth buying. Because it's quite costly to purchase slings. New carriers are being released all the time and often they are trying to 'fix a solution' not worth fixing at a very expensive price-point so won't make the cut - but sometimes innovative things do catch our eye or get us talking, so at least if you ask about it we can advise from a consumer perspective.

This can be incredibly valuable because marketing jargon can be so convincing! The "best" carrier is not the same for every family. A sling that one parent loves may not suit another person's body, lifestyle or baby's stage of development.

Depending on where you are in the country your sling library might get funding. They may also run private consultations for anything which falls out-of-scope. I currently operate as a sole trader business (many of us libraries / consultants do!) but if you do need access to a funded session you may qualify for this brilliant Building Bonds CIC scheme.

At a sling library, you can explore options including:

  • Buckle carriers

  • Ring slings

  • Stretchy wraps

  • Woven wraps

  • Meh Dais

  • Half buckles

  • Toddler and Preschool Carriers

We listen, are passionate, care about you and what we do, you'll be trying things in a judgment-free environment. Safety will be one of our biggest priorities – and our aim is for you to leave feeling reassured and more confident with carrying – we all started somewhere, know how carrying helped us, and now wish to share this amazing skill that could benefit you for many months, if not years to come!

Do I need an appointment in advance?

At Little One Snug, you will need to book your session or hire, whereas some libraries will have drop-ins at community places. Sometimes I do pop-up at local infant feeding-support groups to chat with parents – feeding and carrying often go hand in hand.

Babywearing isn't just about choosing a carrier from a shelf, it is about finding the right fit for you and your baby.

Ahead of your appointment, we can discuss:

  • Your baby's age and stage

  • What you want to use the carrier for

  • Your lifestyle

  • Any previous experience with carriers

  • Any challenges you've been experiencing

This means your session will be tailored in advance and we can spend more time focusing on what your family actually needs.

Can I try different carriers?

Yes! I have so many carriers! I'd recommend a full consulation for this. Or if you are a more confident wearer, hiring and comparing 2 options could be a great approach.

One of the biggest benefits of visiting a sling library is being able to compare options!

You might arrive thinking you want a particular carrier because you've seen it or have been recommended it online, only to discover something completely different works better for you.

Trying before buying helps you understand:

  • What feels comfortable

  • How easy a carrier is to use

  • Which style suits your lifestyle

  • Whether your baby enjoys it

Sometimes the carrier you expected to love isn't the one you end up choosing, and that's completely normal.

Babywearing is not about finding the most expensive carrier or the one everyone recommends online. It is about finding the one that helps your family enjoy closeness, freedom and everyday adventures together.

Sling hire vs buying a baby carrier you've only seen online or maybe a friend said it was good and that's you're only reference!

Buying a baby carrier can be a big investment, especially when you are still discovering what works for your family. Remember babies depending on their age and weight can still really vary in height and length - this will all need to be adjusted for!

Sling hire gives you the chance to:

  • Try a carrier before committing

  • Borrow a carrier for a holiday or special event

  • Use different carriers as your baby grows

  • Avoid spending money on something that doesn't suit you

It is also a brilliant option for parents who want a temporary solution, such as a newborn stage carrier before moving onto something longer term.

If you add on a fitting or book a full consulation then we can cover safety and optimal carrying too – which can really help to flatten the learning curve when starting out your babywearing journey.
