Mission

Why do babies often love being carried?

Babies are born needing plenty of closeness, warmth and responsive care. Carrying keeps your baby physically close while leaving your arms more available for everyday life.

Many parents simply love the feeling of having their baby close — and for some babies, the warmth, movement and familiar sounds of being carried can be wonderfully soothing.

More than just "hands-free"

One of the practical joys of babywearing is being able to get on with parts of everyday life while keeping your baby close.

A carrier might help you navigate a dog walk, settle a baby while making a cup of tea, get around a busy event or simply have two hands available for your older child.

It doesn't have to be all-or-nothing either. You can use a sling for the moments it makes life easier and put it down when you don't need it.

Closeness, connection & regulation?

Carrying gives you lots of opportunities for close interaction: talking, singing, responding to your baby's cues, and simply being together. The warmth, gentle movement and familiar sounds of being close to a caregiver can also be comforting for many babies.

Sometimes it's less about finding a magical "babywearing trick" and more about giving both of you another way to connect.

Babywearing changes as your baby grows

The sling that works beautifully at six weeks might not be what you reach for at six months. As babies grow and develop, both their and your carrying needs can change too. You might want to explore a different carrier, a new position, hip or back carrying, or simply make an existing sling more comfortable. That's completely normal.

It doesn't have to look perfect

Babywearing isn't about having the "best" most expensive carrier or becoming an expert wrapper. It's about finding a way of carrying that is appropriate for your baby's development, comfortable for your body and practical for your life. Sometimes a small adjustment makes all the difference. Sometimes a completely different carrier is the answer. And sometimes you discover that the thing you thought you needed isn't actually what you want at all.

That's where personalised support can be useful.

Babywearing is so rewarding BUT it needs to be optimal, especially in those
early days...

Babywearing can be wonderfully useful, but a carrier isn't simply somewhere to put a baby, or just place it on and go. Your baby's position, airway, support, developmental stage and the way the carrier is fitted all matter, particularly with newborns and younger babies (0-4m) I've put together a separate practical guide to babywearing safety, including the checks I recommend families understand before carrying.
