POST BIRTH PREP: Benefits OF BABYWEARING & How It Can Support Your Postnatal Recovery

Welcoming a newborn is magical, exhausting, and full of firsts. The fourth trimester (those first 12 weeks postpartum) can feel overwhelming, but how you navigate it can make a huge difference to your recovery — physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Babywearing isn’t just a practical way to carry your little one (although this practicality is very empowering when little one really doesn't want to be put down) carrying also has incredible benefits for your baby, your bond with them, and your own wellbeing. Let’s explore in more detail how babywearing early can really help your postnatal journey.

1. Easier Soothing

Crying is your baby’s way of communicating. Biologically, we are primed to respond. When your baby is held close — in your arms, a sling, or carrier the gentle warmth, motion, and your familiar voice and heartbeat help them calm naturally. It'll be very familar to the sounds they heard in the womb. You'll find that swaying, walking, rocking and sshing while babywearing optimally can soothe more effectively than sitting or holding them awkwardly!

2. Great for Bonding

Close contact boosts oxytocin, you'll also recognise this as the “love hormone” also released during birth.

Babywearing can:

  • Support milk supply

  • Help you feel emotionally connected

  • Reduce the risk of postnatal mood challenges

Carrying your baby consistently helps create a strong parent–child bond that benefits both of you.

3. Stimulates Learning

Being close to you provides your baby with rich sensory input. Research shows increased frontal brain activity, meaning more opportunities for learning. Babies mimic, engage, and absorb social cues when they’re carried facing you — unlike in prams or car seats where interaction may be limited. Talking, singing, and gentle motion all support emotional and cognitive development, helping your little one thrive.

4. Supports Secure Attachment

Meeting your baby’s needs consistently — picking them up, soothing, comforting — fosters secure attachment. Secure babies learn to trust, feel safe, and gradually develop independence. Babywearing gives them that constant reassurance while helping you manage daily tasks safely.

5. A Parenting Tool Beyond the Newborn Stage

Just because your child starts walking doesn’t mean carrying ends. Whether it’s helping them rest when legs are tired, regulate big emotions, or soothe illness or fatigue, a well-fitted carrier can be used well into toddlerhood — and it’s often far lighter than carrying them in your arms.

Getting Started with Babywearing

Knowledge is power. Babywearing is safe and effective when done well, but it’s a skill that requires practice. Seeking guidance from a trained, insured consultant can accelerate learning and give you confidence.

Key points to consider:

  • Fit is everything: Newborns need snug support, from knee to knee and across the back.

  • Choosing the right carrier: Not all slings are created equal. Some fit your body or your baby’s developmental stage better than others.

  • Avoid frustration: Many parents give up because the carrier isn’t comfortable or they’ve been given misinformation.

Booking a 1:1 babywearing consultation can help you find the right fit, tweak an existing sling, or explore what works best for you and your baby.

Top Tips for Choosing a Carrier

  • Don’t rely on online “best carrier” lists — marketing often skews what actually works for your body and baby.

  • Consider sling types (some work for newborns far better than others, or will suit your flexibility, body frame, in terms of comfort and ease of use better than others too)

  • Try before you buy: fitting sessions or hiring a carrier can save money and stress.

  • Do this via a trained consultant, rather than shopping on the highstreet where knowledge isn't specialist.

Free antenatal sessions: I run informal babywearing sessions at The Crown Pub in Hastings (3x a year) to introduce safety, benefits, and sling styles. Perfect to prep before your baby arrives. Check session dates and book here.

Summary

Babywearing is a great tool to support your newborn, enhance bonding, and help your recovery. Learning the skills early, getting the right carrier, and practicing safely can make the transition into parenthood much smoother for you all

For personalised guidance, consider booking a 1:1 consultation (bump to baby, or simply postnatally), where we can explore your needs, get to know your sling - in terms of great fit and comfortable. So you feel really confident with things moving forwards.
