Whether you're heading abroad for your first family holiday or visiting relatives for the weekend, travelling with a baby can feel like a military operation.
From passports and nappies to snacks and spare clothes, there's already plenty to think about. One item that many parents say becomes absolutely invaluable?
A baby carrier. If you're navigating busy airports or exploring cobbled streets and sandy beaches, babywearing can make travelling simpler, more comfortable and much less stressful.
So, why take a baby carrier on holiday?
While pushchairs are brilliant in many situations, they're not always the easiest option when travelling.
A baby carrier gives you the freedom to:
Keep your baby close in busy places.
Navigate airports more easily.
Use escalators and stairs without worrying about a buggy.
Explore places where pushchairs struggle.
Comfort your baby during long travel days.
For many families, a carrier can become one of the most-used items in their suitcase.
Airports can feel much easier with a sling
Airports involve plenty of walking, queues and waiting around.
Having your baby comfortably settled in a carrier often leaves your hands free for luggage, passports and boarding passes. Many parents also find their baby settles more easily while being carried, particularly if travel disrupts naps or routines. Remember that airport security procedures vary, so always follow the instructions of security staff when passing through screening.
Think about your destination
The best carrier for a city break might not be the best choice for a beach holiday or countryside adventure. So thinking about how you'll actually use your carrier can help you choose the most practical option.
Ask yourself:
Will you be walking long distances?
Are there lots of steps or uneven paths?
Will the weather be hot?
How old is your child?
Will more than one adult be carrying?
Lightweight carriers can make all the difference
If you're travelling in warm weather or packing light, you may prefer a carrier that's compact and easy to store. The best option depends on your destination and your child's stage of development.
Depending on your child's age, you might consider:

So what's in my holiday babywearing kit?
✔️ A lightweight carrier or ring sling for quick ups and downs
✔️ Potentially a bum bag if the carrier doesn't have a pocket!
✔️ A more supportive carrier if lots of walking is planned
✔️ Hot – A uv cover for shade (without covering baby's face) Cold – Maybe a wrap around coat!
✔️ If I know it's going to be hot a wide brimmed hat for me and baby, plus clip on fan, sun lotion (read more about babywearing in the heat here) and bottle for water spritzing – Cold a nice wolly hat for us each, poss baby legwarmers (read more about carrying in the winter here)
✔️ Wipes and a small wet bag for dribbles or spills
✔️ A reusable water bottle
✔️ Light layers / spare baby clothes to adjust things as needed
