If you're expecting a baby, chances are you've already searched for "the best baby carrier".
Within minutes, you'll have found hundreds of recommendations. It's something that I myself did when I was expecting!
Social media is full of parents sharing their favourite carriers, review websites all seem to have a different winner, and every brand promises theirs is the most comfortable, ergonomic or versatile. It's no wonder choosing your first baby carrier can feel overwhelming. The truth is, there isn't one perfect carrier for everyone, and that's probably the most important thing nobody tells you.
There are far more choices than you expect - and this can make it really tricky to make the 'right' choice.
Before I became a babywearing consultant, I had no idea how many different types of carriers existed. Stretchy wraps, woven wraps, ring slings, buckle carriers, half buckles, Meh Dais, Onbuhimos... At first, it's tempting to think you just need to find the best one. In reality, it's much more about finding the one(s) that suits you and the carrying situation, alongside baby's developmental stage.
You actually don't need to rush
Many parents feel pressure to buy everything before their baby arrives.
While it's completely understandable to want to feel prepared, choosing a baby carrier doesn't have to be a race. Your baby's size, your recovery, your confidence and your daily routine can all influence which carrier will feel right when the time comes. Giving yourself permission to wait, or at least keeping an open mind, can take away a lot of unnecessary pressure. I offer bump to baby sessions for this reason!
The most popular carrier might not be the best for you or your baby
One of the biggest misconceptions is that if thousands of people recommend a carrier, it must be the right choice. But baby carriers are a bit like shoes.
A pair that feels amazing for one person might feel completely wrong for someone else.
Body shape, height, shoulder width, previous injuries, how you like to wear your baby and even the age of your child can all affect what feels comfortable. Recommendations can be a useful starting point, but they shouldn't be the deciding factor.
Comfort and good fit/ positioning matters more than the logo or nice fabrics
It's easy to get drawn in by beautiful prints, clever marketing or a carrier that's suddenly everywhere on Instagram. Those things can be nice, but they don't tell you how the carrier will feel after an hour of carrying your baby. And any carrier can feel awful if it's not correctly or safely fitted. A well-fitted carrier should distribute your baby's weight comfortably and feel supportive for both of you. If something doesn't feel right, it isn't necessarily because you're "doing it wrong". Sometimes it's simply not the right carrier for your body or your needs.

If there's one piece of advice I'd give every new parent, it's this:

Many parents are surprised to discover that the carrier they thought they'd love isn't the one they end up choosing. Trying a few options can save money, reduce frustration and give you much more confidence in your decision.
Every family is different
Think about your own lifestyle. Will you mostly be walking the dog, travelling on public transport or exploring woodland paths? Do you want something quick for nursery drop-offs, or a carrier that can grow with your baby from newborn to toddler? The best carrier isn't the one everyone else is talking about, it's the one that fits your family and encourages you to use it.
Final thoughts
Choosing your first baby carrier doesn't have to be perfect.
It's okay to take your time, ask questions, change your mind and adapt things as your baby grows. With so many options available, it's easy to feel overwhelmed, but remember, you're not looking for the world's best carrier. You're looking for your best carrier.
And if you're able to try a few before buying, you'll give yourself the best chance of finding one that feels comfortable, practical and right for your family from the very beginning.
