If you've been browsing this site you've possibly seen a woven-wrap (there are some images of me carrying my little girl in one!) At first glance they may look complicated, just one long piece of fabric with no buckles, clips or rings. So why do so many experienced babywearers love them? The answer is simple: woven wraps are incredibly versatile, supportive, and comfortable. Although they may seem intimidating at first, many parents discover they're far easier to learn than they expected.
What is a woven wrap?
A woven wrap is a long piece of specially woven fabric designed for carrying babies and children. Unlike a stretchy wrap, the fabric has very little stretch, so we need to 'strand by strand' tighten. So that it moulds around both you and your baby to create a supportive, customised fit. And also because of this structure you can get away with single layered carry's (with a stretchy wrap you need 3 layers). Because the wrap is adjusted around your individual body, many people find woven wraps become one of the most comfortable ways to carry as their child grows.
Are woven wraps suitable from birth?
Yes - it's worth noting your base-size (good size length for you to do am fwcc tied behind your back, with good enough length of tail leftover) might be smaller at this stage than in toddlerhood, but you can adapt carrys to work for various length wraps! Many woven wraps can be used from the newborn stage all the way through toddlerhood and even into the preschool years. Some wraps may require more 'breaking-in' than others. The key is learning how to tie the wrap and getting familar with tips and techniques in terms of how to tighten best, and learning about how you can adapt things appropriately for your baby's age and stage of development. This is one of the reasons woven wraps are often seen as a long-term investment, they can adapt as your family grows rather than needing replacing every few months.
Why do parents love woven wraps?
Every family has different preferences, but woven wraps are popular because they offer:
An incredibly adjustable fit.
Excellent weight distribution.
Support from newborn to toddler.
A wide variety of carrying positions, with different lengths of fabric (i.e base + 1, -2 etc) Sizes 1-9!
Beautiful fabrics and colours to suit every taste.
A carrier that adapts to different body shapes and sizes.
Many parents also enjoy the closeness and flexibility that woven wrapping offers once they've built confidence.
Are woven wraps difficult?
This is probably the biggest myth surrounding woven wraps.
Yes, there is a learning curve, but so is learning to fit most baby carriers properly.
Many parents are surprised by how quickly tying becomes second nature after a little practice. Starting with one simple carry and practising at home can build confidence much faster than trying to learn lots of different techniques at once.
Can I use a woven wrap for back carrying?
Yes. And from newborn (though I wouldn't suggest starting here if not familiar with carrying!) This is quite n advanced skill, especially to do so safely.
One of the biggest advantages of woven wraps is their versatility. As your baby develops, many families choose to explore hip carries and back carries, making woven wraps one of the few carrier types that can comfortably adapt throughout your entire babywearing journey. While you could outward face in a woven - personally I wouldn't - there are MUCH more comfier ways to use your wrap and better support your child! Is a woven wrap right for everyone?
No, while some parents love the adjustability and custom fit of a woven wrap, others prefer the simplicity of a buckle carrier or the quick convenience of a ring sling, or maybe opt for the halfway house of a Meh Dai or Half Buckle. There isn't one "best" carrier, only the one that suits your family, your lifestyle and your confidence. That's why trying different options before buying via a sling library or retailer offering this can be so valuable. What is the best baby carrier for me though?!
Final thoughts
Woven wraps may look complicated at first, but they offer an incredibly versatile, supportive and comfortable way to carry your baby from the newborn stage through toddlerhood and beyond. If you're curious but unsure where to start, don't let the length of the fabric put you off. With a little guidance and practice, many parents discover that woven wraps become their favourite carrier of all.
